ܒܝܣܦܩܐ byspqʾ messenger, courier, mail-coach
According to Widengren 1960, 31 f., n. 112, this is a loanword from MP bayaspak [byʾspk] mail-coach, Parthian word attested in Frahang ī Oīm (K 20, 79 v 3; cf. Bailey 1943, 46 f.), < OIr. *dvai-aspaka. On the contrary, Peeters 1946, 110 n. 125 suggests to emend byspqʾ to dyspqʾ, borrowed from MP dēspak (< OIr. *dvai-aspaka). The emendation does not seem to have any other reason than the presence of Talm. Aram. dyspq (← MP dēspak), and it is unnecessary. In the Life of Mār –bā, Syr. byspqʾ indicates the hearse that carries the corpse of the catholicos to the cathedral of Kōkhē. Both byspqʾ and byspnʾ (see the previous entry) are only used in contexts in which Sasanian matters are involved ● Bedjan, Hist. 224
