ܟܰܪܟܕܳܢܳܐ krkdnʾ karkḏānā rhinoceros
NP kargadan rhinoceros (Steingass 1024); cf. MP karg [klg] rhinoceros (CPD 50); NP karg id. (Steingass 1024); Arab. karkaddan; see also qrwšg. The word is probably a loanword from OInd. khaḍgadhenu- (female of) rhinoceros, or khaḍgin- armed with a sword; rhinoceros (Turner 1966, no. 3786 ff.; Monier-Williams 1899, 335), where khaḍgá- sword, rhinoceros, in its turn, is of non-Aryan origin (see Leslau 1987, 291, s.v. karkand; Kuiper 1948, 136 ff.). See also Gr. καρτάζωνος (recte *καργάζωνος) Indian rhinoceros (Aelianus Nat. An. 16, 20). On the disputed etymon of this word cf. Mayrhofer EWA 1, 443; Id. KEWA 1, 299 and 318, with bibl. ● BB 922, 4; PsC 211, 15 (emend.; see Ciancaglini 2001b, 129) ◆ LS 346a–b, Lagarde GA 61, 155
