ܐܽܘܫܰܢܳܐ wšnʾ ošanā stallion (ass, horse)
OIr. *vr̥šna- (cf. OInd. vr̥ṣán- big, strong; male, ox, vr̥ṣṇí- ram, Av. varšni- id.), from which *vušn > MP gušn male (Nyberg 87; CPD 38); NP gušn id. (Steingass 1091). — Md. ʿwšnʾ, ʿwšʾnʾ. Horn 206, s.v. gušn, puts forward the hypothesis that Syr. ʾwšnʾ and Md. ʿwšnʾ (considered by Nöldeke 1874a, 96 as loanwords from Iranian forms derived from OIr. *vr̥šna-) could be etymologically related to Av. uxšan- bull, ox, Goth. auhsa ox. However, two different IE roots gave rise respectively to OIr. *wr̥šna-, Av. varšni-, OInd. vr̥ṣán-, vr̥ṣṇí-, Lat. verrēs boar, Lith. veršis calf, Latv. versis ox, steer etc. (Walde-Pokorny I 268 f.) and OInd. ukṣán- bull, Av. uxšan- bull, ox, Goth. auhsa ox, OE oxa, OHG, OS ohso ox (Walde-Pokorny I 248 f.). In Syr. is also attested gwšnʾ gūšnā (see s.v.), which exactly corresponds to MP gušn ● Jer 5, 8; ES 2, 110A; am 4, 157, 1; KwD 152, 19 = 279, 11; Joh Eph 8, 18; Geop. 107, 30 ◆ LS 53a; Lagarde GA 11, 17
