ܩܰܘܕܳܐ qwdʾ qawdā 1. fetter; 2. diadem (?); 3. the milky way
Allotrope (?): ܩܲܘܛܵܐ qwṭʾ qawṭā fetters, chains
LS, following a tentative hypothesis advanced by Nöldeke (WZKM 12, 1898, 359), suggests the comparison of Syr. qwṭʾ, appearing in Pogn. inscr. 2, 155, 2, 5 etc., with NP kund fetter, clog (Steingass 1053); Syr. qwṭʾ, according to LS and Nöldeke, is an allotrope of qwdʾ; PS Suppl. 294, on the contrary, considers qwṭʾ as a different word, of unknown origin, meaning "curse, malediction". PS Comp. 492 only records qwdʾ, with the meaning "fetter, bond, chain"; only in lexicographers (BB) the word would have the meanings: "the milky way", and "hoarfrost, rime; fine rain, drizzle". As regards the meaning "diadem", I suspect that we are dealing with a different word, connected with another Iranian loanword in Syriac, namely Syr. ḥwdʾ helmet, casque (cf. s.v.) ● fetter 1 Mcc 3, 41; JSB 2, 319, 11; Bh car 56, 8; BA 4583; diadem IAB 1, 533, 8 cf.
