ܒܰܒܰܓܳܐ [†] bbgʾ baḇaḡā parrot
Reborrowing: ܦܵܦܵܐ ppʾ pāp̄ā
LS compares the two Syr. words with NP babγāʾ, babbaγāʾ (← Arab.) parrot (Steingass 154), NP bapγā id. (ibid.). However, the Syr. words are early attested and, if they were borrowed from Iranian, the model should be MP, where a correspondent word does not seem to be attested. In fact, both in Syriac and in NP the word for "parrot" derive from the West African word pampakei (Schapka 1972, 20 f.), which is also the model of many European correspondent words (for example It. pappagallo, Germ. papagei) ● bbgʾ KwDW 162, 9 etc.; ppʾ PsC 211, 9 ◆ LS 57b; 586b
