ܦܪܢܓܡܘܫܟ prngmwšk Caryophyllus aromaticus
The ultimate origin of the Syr. word, which indicates a kind of basil whose leaves are spotted and musky, is MP palang mušk [plng mwšk] speckled basil (CPD 64); however, the epoch of the borrowing is not clear, and consequently it is not excluded that the Syr. word comes from NP palang mišk a herb growing at Baghdād, musky, and spotted like a leopard (Steingass 255), and NP palang mūš a fragrant plant (ibid.), or from NP, Arab. faranǰmušk, falanǰmišk a sweet basil (Steingass 922 and 938), as suggested by LS ● BB 1628, 14; 1841, 1; Löw n. 301, Flora J. 2, 275 ◆ LS 599a; Duval index pers. 223
