Lagarde and LS refer to Av. ĝaiiana- stay, residence, dwelling-place, a derivative of Av. ĝaii- to live, dwell (AirWb 1706 f.), cf. Arm. LW šēn village, country (Hübschmann AG 213, no. 480). LS seems convinced of the Iranian origin of this Syr. root, and considers less convincing the comparison with Hebr. šʾnn to pacify, Ethiopic senʾ peace. If the Ir. origin were tenable, and in view of the semantic values of the Syr. derivative, we should theoretically posit a formal merger of Av. ĝaiiana- stay, residence, dwelling-place and Av. ĝ(ii)ā- to be glad (AirWb 1716); cf. also Md. šai(a)nā peace, calm (Drower – Macuch 1963, 441). However, Leslau 1987, 504 f., s.v. Ethiopic sənʾ, senʾā "peace, unanimity, agreement, harmony" connects the word with Eth. snʾw "to be at peace with, live in peace", which would be a true and old Semitic word, being related to Akkad. šanānu "to make equal, equalize". Consequently, Leslau seems rather to join the Ethiopic words with Hebr. šaʾänān "be at ease", and with Syr. šayyen "to pacify". In my opinion, the Syr. word is formally a pure Semitic one (as is also testified by the exceeding number of derivatives, which would be surprising even for an old and adapted loanword), but in the meaning "cultivated land", "domestic", etc. it may be interpreted as a semantic calque on (Iranian words related to) Av. ĝaiiana- stay, residence, dwelling-place, ĝaii- to live, dwell ● highly frequent ◆ LS 773b–774a; Lagarde AS § 2333
