Inscr. ptgm (Paikuli; Humbach – Skjærvø 1978–1983, 3/1, 120); MP paygām [pgtʾm] message (CPD 67); ManMP pygʾm /paygām/ message (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 289); Ps. ptwʾm-bl apostle (ψ 1, 36 Kanon); ManParth. pdgʾm, pdγʾm /padγām/ message (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 269); Arm. Aram. ptgm word, message, decree (Greenfield 1987, 275; Shaked 1987, 259; Driver 1957, 50); Talm. Aram. ptgmʾ word, pronunciation, order, event (Telegdi 253, 119); and Hebr. piṯgām pronunciation: all these forms trace back to OP *patigāma- (see § 11); on the other hand, Md. pwgdmʾ pugdāmā (Widengren 99; Nöldeke, MG xxxii and 74) seems to come from Parth. paδgām (Mancini 1995, 85; according to Telegdi, from an Iranian form with metathesis *paγδām; cf. paγtām in Frahang, p. 121); the Mandaic form reflects “late inner-Aramaic developments” (Shaked 1987, 259); Skjærvø 1999, 40 and n. 57, quotes Off. Aram. (Aramaic documents from Egypt: Driver 1957, 25 and 50) gast patgām letter of rebuke (?) in, e.g., A 6.8, l. 3 Porten – Yardeni 1986–1989 (cf. ibid. Nyberg 149, s.v. paytām [pytʾm] reconstructs two OIr. allotropes, that is OIr. *pati-γāma-, *paiti-γāma- (with epenthesis), whence double forms in SW: 1. without epenthesis and -γ- > -v-: Ps. ptwʾm-bl apostle; 2. with epenthesis and -iγ- > -iy-: *paitiyām > MP paytām [pytʾm] < *paitiyām with dissimilation of -iy- (as in paytāk < *paitiyāk); NW form: patγām, Parth. *patγāma-: Arm. LW patgam, ManParth. pdgʾm; ManMP pygʾm represents the NW form patγām with SW treatment of pat- > pay-; NP has both: payγām (= ManMP) and payām with -γ- > -y-. Cf. Bailey 1931b, 591.
