ܫܪܓܘܙܐ šrgwzʾ Myristica moschata, the mace and nutmeg-tree
Allotropes: ܫܪܓܘܙ šrgwz (emended by LS to ܫܕܓܘܙ šdgwz); ܫܝܠܓܘܨܪܐ šylgwṣrʾ
LS refers to NP čārkūz (not recorded in Steingass, nor in Dihxudā); more probably, the Syr. word represents an allotrope of NP čārgūn mace; saddle-tree (Steingass 385): the first element is NP čahār four; -gūn, as kindly suggested by Paola Orsatti (personal communication), may be an istitutionalized miswritten form of Pers. gūz walnut, due to the similarity of final -n and -z in the oldest scribal Arabic varieties. If Syr. šrgwzʾ comes from NP čārgūz, the emendation of ܙܘܓܪܫ šrgwz in BB 1935, 15 to ܙܘܓܕܫ šdgwz, suggested by LS 758b, is clearly wrong ● šrgwzʾ BB 704, 12; 2008pu; cf.
