LS and PS Suppl. suggest a derivation from NP šāhbānaǰ a hard Egyptian tree (Steingass 726) and NP, Arab. šāhfānaǰ (not recorded in Steingass); cf. also NP šāhbānak a sort of medicinal plant (ibid.); however, the second element of the compound does not seem to me clearly identified, NP -bānaǰ not corresponding to Syr. -pbg, -pbq. I would suggest a model such as MP *šāh-pābag or something similar, corresponding to NP šāh bābak (Arabized form šāhbābaǰ) listed in Dihxudā as allotrope of NP šāhbānaǰ ● Med 53, 12; 610, 8; BB 1938, 16; Löw 56 ◆ LS 760a; PS Suppl. 328
