Allotrope: ܪܘܣܦܢ rwspn
Early MP *rōzpān, with the Syr. devoicing of the final consonant of the first member of the compound; cf. the MP derivative rōz(b)ānag [lwc(p)ʾnk'] window (CPD 72), lit. "light covering" (cf. Maggi 2003, no. 11); NP rōzan a window, a loophole (Steingass 594; Horn 140), cf. Av. raocana- light, window (AirWb 1489); MP rōzan [lwcn'] window (CPD 72). As regards the MP suffixoid -bānag "covering" see § 9.3.2 and Maggi 2003, no. 11. According to PS Suppl., the meaning of this Syr. word is "lattice; a barred room, prison"; PS Comp. 535 translates "a brass grating or lattice outside a door of wood; a chancel"; Duval index pers. 219, suggests that it could be another rendering of NP rūzbān a porter, especially at the royal gates, a footman; a protector, a patron; an executioner (Steingass 593); LS only refers to a possible Iranian origin, without quoting any form ● rwspnʾ Bh ZDMG 24, 511u; ad Jud 5, 28; BB 1812, 13; rwspn Bedjan, Hist. 230, 12 ◆ LS 737a; PS 3868; PS Comp. 535; PS Suppl. 317; Duval index pers. 219
