ܪܘܙܦܐܢܓ rwzpʾng executioner
Reborrowing: ܪܘܼܙܒܵܢܵܐ rwzbnʾ ruzbānā id.
The Syr. form rwzbnʾ represents MP rōzbān gaoler, executioner; Sogd. rwčpʾn; NP rūzbān a porter, especially at the royal gates, a footman; a protector, a patron; an executioner (Steingass 593); OP *raučapāna- lit. "day watcher" (Hinz 1975, 202); rwzpʾng seems to represent Early MP rōzpān, rōzpānag, namely an earlier form of MP rōzbānag, which, however, is only attested in the meaning "window"; cf. Benveniste 1955, 327; Hoffmann 1880, 91 n. 827; Labourt 1904, 181. — Cf. Md ruzbā, proper noun (Nöldeke MG 69; but, according to Drower – Macuch 1963, 429 ← Pers. rōzbih happy, fortunate, Steingass 593). The older form of the Syr. borrowing is attested later than the recent one: rwzpʾng, that maintains the voiceless labial plosive, occurs in BB, whereas rwzbnʾ, with the voiced bilabial stop, is attested in am.
