MP kākanag (Gignoux 1998–1999, 198), NP kākuna, NP and Arab. kāknaǰ wintercherry, nightshade, a gum produced by a tree in the mountains of Herat (Steingass 1007). Gignoux, cit., observes that Budge's translation "halicacabon (cornel tree)" is probably wrong and adds that the plant name is certainly Iranian, but what is interesting is the fact that initial k- remained in the Persian and Arabic forms, and did not become q- through Syriac, contrary to the general rule: see the previous entry and § 11.3.1 ● Med 315, 7; BB 1830, 12; cf.
