ܣܰܢܘܰܪܬܳܐ snwrtʾ sanwartā head-covering, cap, helmet
Derivative: ܐܹܣܬܲܢܐܪ ʾstnr estanar to put on a helmet
Probably from OP *sara-varti- (cf. Shaked 1987, 261); MP *sārəwart, Arm. LW saawart (Hübschmann AG 235, no. 566); cf. Av. sārauuāra- helmet (AirWb 1572); MP sārwār a helmet, a defensive armour for the head (Kapadia 1953, 113); ManMP and ManParth. sʾrwʾr /sārwār/ helmet (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 306); NP sarbār a bundle of the top of a load, a load born upon the head, NP sarvār a small load upon a heavier one (Steingass 669; 679; Horn 161). — Middle Aram. snwʾrt helmet (Shaked 1987, 261: probably from OP *sara-varti-) and Talm. Aram. snwwrtʾ helmet (Telegdi 249, 101). The first element of the Ir. compound is connected with Av. sarah-, sāra- head (AirWb 1565 and 1572), MP sar head, top, summit (CPD 74), NP sar id. (Steingass 664 ff.). For the second element appearing in Arm. LW saawart, Hübschmann, cit. compares Av. ham.varətay- (AirWb 1810), from Av. 1var- to wrap (ibid. 1360). See also Gr. σαράβαρα (Antiphanes fr. 199 K.–A., fourth cent. BC; Hesych.); and Lat. sarabara, for which Isidorus 19, 23 mentions two different meanings, consequence of a formal merger with some antecedent of MP šālwar trouser (see s.v. As regards the dissimilation r ... r > n ... r occurring in Syr. and Talm. Aram. see Telegdi, cit. and § 11.3.2; in the Arm. loanword the Ir. sequence r ... r shows a different dissimilation, namely ... r ● snwrtʾ 1Sm 17, 5; 1Mcc 6, 35; Eph 6, 17; Afr 104, 16; AS 3, 127, 18; IA 1, 136, 1218; am 2, 88, 12; ʾstnr ER 9, 11 ◆ LS 486b; Lagarde GA 72, 180 and p. 206; PS Comp. 383
