ܨܪܫܘܡ [†] ṣršwm, ܨܪܫܡ ṣršm the fruit of the tamarisk
LS compares NP gazm the tamarisk-tree (Steingass 1088); NP gazmāzak the fruit of tamarisk-tree (ibid.); Duval index pers. 222, lists ṣršwm and ṣršm together with ܨܢܫܝܡܙܓ ṣnšymzg (BB 807), a presumed allotrope not recorded in LS, and compares, besides NP gazm and gazmāzak, NP kašmīraǰ (not recorded in Steingass); Lagarde GA 80, 203 emends Syr. ṣnšymzg to ṣšmyzg, and argues that it is a rendering of NP čašmīzak, whose meaning however is "a black shining grain resembling a pippin, with which, when pulverized, they anoint the eyes" (Steingass 395). As regards NP gazm, gazmāzak, see s.v. gzmzg. All the etyma proposed involve Ir. forms that are much too distant from the Syr. spellings ṣršwm and ṣršm, and do not seem to have any formal connection with them. The origin of the Syr. term remains unexplained, and consequently the Iranian etymon seems to be excluded ● BB 1673, 5; 1684, 21 ◆ LS 639b
