ܦܺܝܪܽܘܙܰܓ pyrwzg piruzaḡ sapphire
Allotrope (or mispelling?): ܦܪܢܘܓ prnwg copper (?)
Probably MP *pērōzag, from MP pērōz victorious (CPD 68); cf. NP pīrōza a turquoise, a kind of blue gem (Steingass 265); NP, Arab. fīrōza turquoise; fīrūzaǰ turquoise-stone (ibid. 944). — Arab. fayrūzaǧ id. As regards prnwg, LS, following Budge 1889, 6 n. 1, suggests that prnwg may be compared with NP piring copper (Steingass 244); but the word is a Persian gloss to a Syriac hapax ḥlnʾ, whose meaning is uncertain. Budge proposes that it could mean "copper", on the basis of the interpretation of the related gloss; but Nöldeke (1890, 16) understood ḥlnʾ as the Syriac rendering of Greek ὄνυχες, meaning "gemmae", and the Syriac word is recorded with this meaning and etymon in LS 235b. Fraenkel (1891, 314 f.) corrects the Persian gloss prnwg to pyrwzg: in this case, prnwg "copper" would be a ghost-word, being a mispelling of pyrwzg sapphire ● pyrwzg Bh ad Js 54, 11; BB 1274, 16; prnwg PsC 9, 7 ◆ LS 594a; 599a; Lagarde GA 75, 192; Duval index pers. 224; Nöldeke in Hübschmann 1895, 175; Ciancaglini 1998, 72
