ܦܽܘܠܳܕ pwld pulāḏ steel
Reborrowing: ܒܘܠܐܕ bwlʾd
NP pūlād steel generally, a sword, NP pūlad steel (Steingass 260; 254; Horn 75); MP pōlāwad [pwlʾpt] steel (CPD 69; Nyberg 162); ManMP pwlʾwd /pōlāwad/ steel (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 286); Arm. LW poopat, poowat steel (Hübschmann AG 230–231, no. 547); cf. Henning 1947, 45. See also Russ. bulat steel, sword; Mongol bolot id. (Laufer 1919, 575). The Syr. term was probably borrowed from NP, even if it is attested in KwD (see § 9.1), but Sims-Williams (personal communication) observes that it seems quite possible that the contracted form was already used in MP. The form bwlʾd, later attested, seems to be a reborrowing from the Arab.
