ܦܘܛܢܐ pwṭnʾ (emended from ܦܘܛܝܐ pwṭyʾ) mint
MP *pūtinak, later *pūdinag mint; NP pūdina mint, pūdīna mint, spearmint (Steingass 259). — Talm. Aram. pwṭng (var. pwtnq) mint (Telegdi 249, 104). According to Telegdi, Talm. Aram. pwṭng is a loanword from MP *pūtanak, a form which, however, is more likely connected with MP pūdag [pwtk'] foul, rotten (CPD 69), NP pūda rubbed, worn, rotten (Steingass 259); MP pūd [pwt'] putrid matter (Nyberg 163), Av. pūti- putrescence (AirWb 909); OInd. pū́ti- putrid, pūtika- id. (Turner 1966, no. 8323 f.). It is better to postulate as the model of the Talm. Aram. and Syr. borrowings MP *pūtinak, later *pūdinag mint, a form which is indepedent of the aforementioned words, but perhaps connected with OInd. pūṭakī- name of a plant, pūtī́ka- a plant used in place of soma (Turner 1966, no. 8325; Mayrhofer KEWA 2, 155: "nichtarisch"). Laufer 1919, 198 n. 3 also mentions Hindī (← Pers.) pūdīnā, pūdinēkā peppermint ● ON 146, 15 ◆ LS 564b; Fraenkel 1886, 73
