ܣܢܕܪܘܣ [?] sndrws sandarac, gum of the juniper
Cf. NP, Arab. sandaros gum of the red juniper, sandaracha, red arsenic (Steingass 701); cf. also, however, Gr. σανδαράκη, σανδαράχη, a word already attested in Aristot. Hist. an. 604b28 and Hdt. 1, 98 (σανδαράκινος) and, according to Frisk (II 675), borrowed from an unknown Oriental language; Frisk, cit., considers doubtful the etymological attempts advanced by some scholars, according to which the Gr. word comes from OInd. *candra-rāga- of the colour of the moon (?), or from OInd. *candana-rāga- of the colour of the sand. The Gr. term appears as a loanword in Syr. sndrkʾ, sndrkyn, sndrkys (LS 484b) ● Med 310, 7; BB 1242, 10 ◆ LS 484b; PS Suppl. 236; Duval index pers. 220
