ܢܶܟܘܳܪ nkwʾr nekwār a title
Parth., MP naxwār [nswbʾl] prefect, governor, lit. "the one having the highest (rank)", < OIr. *naxwa-bā̆ra- > *naxwa-wā̆ra- (Huyse 2004, 44). The naxwār was an official of the Sasanian provincial administration: see Gyselen 2004, with bibl. Benveniste's hypothesis (1929, 6 f.) notwithstanding, Huyse (2004, 44 n. 62) and Gignoux (2004, 43) do not find it necessary to distinguish between NW and SW forms of this Middle Iranian title, which depends on a single antecedent, namely OIr. *naxwa-bā̆ra-. A detailed analysis of the Iranian title and its occurrences in Syriac texts appears in Gignoux 2004, 41–43. See also s.vv. nwhdrʾ and nkwrgn ● Th Marg 1, 248, 18; Ming 212, 12 ◆ PS Suppl. 211
