ܡܪܡܐܗܘܙ [?] mrmʾhwz, ܡܪܡܗܘܙ mrmhwz marjoram
According to LS, a word of Semitic origin, to be compared with Aram., Md. mʾrmʾhwz and Arab. marmāḥūz; on the contrary, Gignoux 1998, 730 n. 22 claims the Iranian origin: “Le nom de la marjolaine ou origan, que Budge traduit aussi par ‘laitue des bois’ (?), syr. mrmhwz, représente le perse marmahûz, pour lequel je ne puis proposer une étymologie”; the Ir. origin was also supposed by PS Suppl., which refers to NP marmāhūz (not recorded in Steingass) ● Med 88, 6; BB 619, 4; 994, 11; 1154, 8 ◆ LS 404b; PS Suppl. 201; Löw 252
