ܟܳܘܶܣܬܳܐ kwstʾ kāwestā a plant
Reborrowing: ܩܵܒܹܣܬ qbst qāḇest colocynth
MP kabast (Bund.); NP kabast, kabasta, kabastū colocynth, bitter gourd (Steingass 1012) and NP kavast, kavasta, kavastū id. (ibid. 1062), kīstū the colocynth or wild gourd (ibid. 1069); cf. Horn 187, who also quotes Jud.-Pers. kbst. LS does not propose any etymon for kwstʾ, but identifies qbst as a loanword from NP kabast. In my opinion, the two Syr. forms represent a case of reborrowing, where kwstʾ is the older borrowing, and qbst is the more recent one. As regards Syr. -w- for internal MP -b- see § 11.3.1 ● kwstʾ Med 574, 13; qbst ON 112, 17 ◆ LS 322b; 643a
