ܟܘܛܘܘܕܬܝܗ kwṭwwdtyh (emended to ܟܘܛܘܕܘܬܝܗ kwṭwdwtyh) kin-marriage
Av. xvaētuuadaθa- < *xvaētu-vadaθa- family marriage (AirWb 1860), learned loanword into Early MP *xwētōdātīh, later *xwēdōdādīh, a derivative of MP xwēdōdah [hwytw(k)ds, -dʾt'] kin-marriage (CPD 96; Nyberg 224); Nyberg 224 informs that MP xwēdōdād was connected by popular etymology with dād "law", whereas the better Book Pahlavi form is [hwytw(k)ds] xwēdōdah, where -s is the inverse spelling of -h, and silent -k- indicates that the preceding letter is -w-. Note that the Syr. attested spelling kwṭwwdtyh (which was unnecessarily emended to kwṭwdwtyh in view of the MP form of the word) represents the Avestan form better than Pahlavi does: see § 11.3.1. On Mār Abā opposition to this practice among Persian converts see § 5.2.2. According to PS Suppl. 161 the meaning of the Syr. word would be "unchastity, incest"; the proposed etymon (Av. kaiiaδa- a particular sinful act, AirWb 441) is completely wrong. In Bedjan's edition the word shows a dot above the final letter, as also happens in gtyh (see s.v.). As regards this Syr. loanword see also §§ 11.3.1; 11.3.6 ● am 2, 578, 9 ◆ LS 325a; Nöldeke 1893, 36 n. 8
