ܟܽܘܕܚܳܐ [?] kwdḥʾ kuḏḥā condiment, sharp sauce
Allotrope: ܟܘܼܬܵܐ kwtʾ kuttā a sharp sauce, digestive relish
Perhaps connected with NP katax butter-milk, milk, butter-milk and salt; katix a mixture of sweet and sour (Steingass 1014)? — Talm. Aram. kwtḥ, kwtḥʾ name of a dish (Telegdi 246, 88); PS Suppl. 163 compares Talm. Bab. kwtʾ, form with elision of ḥ and equivalent to kwtḥʾ, according to Fleischer apud Levy 1924, II 459 and Löw 1909. All the Aram. words in the first syllable have a high back vowel indicated by -w- that seem inexplicable, if we admit that they are loanwords from a form connected to NP katax. According to Telegdi, NP katax is an old loanword from Turk. qāteq mixture, dish and seasoning for noodles, borrowed after the accomplishment of the Iranian change -t- > -δ- (differently, we would have NP *kaδak). However, it seems that the borrowing in Talm. Aram. and in Syr. was made from Iranian and, at least in the case of the Talm. Aram. word, certainly already from Middle Iranian, because it is attested early and shows the rendering of Ir. x with ḥ (instead of k: see § 11.3.3). As for ḏ of Syr. kwdḥʾ (in comparison with -t- in NP katax), Telegdi believes that it is due to a dissimilation, and compares Md. kaδpā < kaθpā (Nöldeke MG 42) ● kwdḥʾ BA 4612; BB 871, 21; kwtʾ BA 4679 ◆ LS 318b; 351b; Löw 373; PS Suppl. 159
