MP yašt [yšt'] prayer, worship (CPD 97; Nyberg 225); the MP word is usually considered a loanword from Av. yašta-, past part. of yaz- to worship (AirWb 1274 ff.), or from Av. yaštay-, yešti- worship, pray (ibid. 1280): see Panaino 1994 and the different etymological proposal in Pirart 1997 (Av. yašta-, yešti- < yas- "to give a particular status", different from the antecedent of MP yašt, namely the Av. substantive *yašta- < yaz-); NP yašt name of a chapter of the Zand (Steingass 1531); cf.
