Allotropes: ܙܢܓܒܠܐ zngblʾ; ܙܢܓܝܒܪ zngybr; ܙܝܢܓܒܝܪ zyngbyr; ܙܢܓܒܝܪ zngbyr
MP singibēr [sngypyl]; Gignoux (1998–99, 200) observes that Syr. zngybr corresponds exactly to Latin zingiber, whereas the MP form begins with s-. See also Gignoux 1998, 730, where the MP sequence singibēr ī čīnīg is quoted. The MP word has a Middle Indian origin: cf. Pāli siṅgivera-, Skr. śr̥ṅgavera-, probably an artificial Sanskritization (Turner 1966, no. 12588; Ross 1952); cf. also Gr. ζιγγίβερι (Frisk I 614). See also NP, Arab. zanǰabīl ginger (Steingass 624; Arab. zanǧabīl comes from Syriac) and NP šankalīl id. (ibid. 763).
