ܘܨ [†] wṣ waṣ ἄκορον, Iris pseudacorus
LS refers to NP, Arab. waǰǰ galangale (Steingass 1456); this botanic term is of Indian origin: cf. Skr. vaca- a kind of aromatic root, perhaps Acorus calamus (Monier-Williams 1899, 912), MInd. vacā- id. (Turner 1966, no. 653; cf. Mayrhofer EWA 3, 452; KEWA 3, 126). See also Laufer 1919, 583. It is probable that Syr. wṣ was borrowed directly from Indian, because the final -ṣ would be unusual as rendering of Ir. (or Arab.) ǰ (see § 11.3.4) ● BB 667, 7 ◆ LS 185b; Lagarde GA 40, 100; Löw n. 87; Duval index pers. 228
