ܕܳܢܩܳܐ dnqʾ dānqā the sixth part of the dirham
Early MP *dān(a)k, MP dāng a coin, a measure (Frahang p. 114); OP *dānaka- name of a small Persian coin (Hinz 1975, 82), Gr. LW δανάκη (Callimachus fr. 110 Pfeiffer; Poll. 9, 82; cf. Frisk I 347); Arm. LW dank a little coin (Hübschmann AG 134, no. 162); NP dāng the fourth part of a dram; a sixth of anything (Steingass 501; Vullers 1, 803b; Horn 118); cf. MP dānag [dʾn(k')] seed, grain (CPD 24); NP dāna grain (Steingass 501; Horn 118). — Talm. Aram. dnqʾ the sixth part of the dirham (Telegdi 239, 51); Md. dnqʾ obolus (Drower – Macuch 1963, 100). According to Telegdi, the maintenance of the voiced -g (< -k) in NP dāng, in comparison with its loss in NP dāna, is due to the early loss of -a- in the old Iranian suffix -ak; Telegdi also quotes Parth. bišihk physician < bišahak.
