The etymon is unclear to me. LS and Duval refer to Fraenkel 1893, 79, according to whom the term is surely a loanword from Persian. However, Fraenkel does not specify what Iranian form, in his opinion, could have been the model of the loanword; he only declares that the Syr. word has nothing to do with NP (← Arab.) ǰahar being day-blind, nyctalopy (Steingass 381), from the Arab. root ǧhr to be brought to light, show, appear ● BB 458, 7 ◆ LS 107a; Duval index pers. 217
