ܒܪܚܐ brḥʾ kid; ram, wether
Cf. MP warrag [wlk'] lamb, ram; astr. Aries (CPD 87); ManMP and ManParth. wrg /warrag/ lamb, the sign Aries (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 345); OIr. *warn-a-ka- (Mayrhofer EWA 1, 225); NP barra a lamb; the sign Aries (Steingass 181). — Talm. Aram. brḥʾ (Telegdi 235, 35: ← Pahl. varrak). The loanword must be relatively old, being attested in a Syr. work dating back to the sixth century AD, and occurring also in Talm. Aram. brḥʾ. Syr. final ḥ (followed by the aleph of the emphatic state) is considered inexplicable by Telegdi (235, 35) and exceptional by Shaked (1987, 260). In my opinion, in this loanword the final ḥ represents the rare MP and NP outcome x of OP postvocalic -k-: see § 11.3.1.1. In other words, Syr. brḥʾ should have been borrowed from a dialectal allotrope of MP warrag ● kid KwD 169, 7 = 2104, 15; ram, wether BA 2597; BB 428, 20 ◆ LS 96a; Horn 49
