Probably an imperfect calque on MP zēndān jail; lit. armoury, depository of weapons, arsenal, from zēn weapon + -dān -holder, -container (CPD 99 and 24; Nyberg 231); ManMP and ManParth. zyndʾn /zēndān/ prison (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 387); NP zindān prison, jail (Steingass 625).
