ܒܗܡܐܕܝܢ ܣܘܗܪ bhmʾdyn swhr name of a root
MP *wahmanēn (ī) suxr? The exact etymon of this Ir. loanword is not perfectly clear, probably because the Syr. form is corrupt. The second element surely represents MP suxr [swhl] red (CPD 78); ManMP swhl /suhr/ id. (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 310); NP surx id. As to the first one, I believe that the Syr. form bhmʾdyn has to be considered a dissimilation from bhmʾnyn: in this case, the Syr. expression would correspond exactly to MP *wahmanēn (ī) suxr (see § 11.3.2), cf. NP bahmanīn name of a plant which flowers also in winter, and whose root is red and white (Steingass 212). The semantic shift is clear, the bahmanīn being a plant that flourishes in winter and MP wahman being the name of a winter month (January – February); note also that MP wahman 11th month (CPD 86) is early attested with a botanic meaning (see the next entry). LS credits the Iranian origin, but proposes an incomprehensible Pers. به ماذين سرخ be māzīn-i surx (?) ● Med 599, 15 ◆ LS 61a
