MP *bādingān (etymon suggested by Gignoux, personal communication), or from NP, Arab. bādinǰān and bādilǰān the egg-plant or brinjal (Steingass 140); as regards the rendering of /ǰ/ with Syr. g see § 9.3.2. Cf. also NP bātingān the egg-plant (Steingass 136): Steingass suggests a comparison with OInd. bhaṇṭākī, but see rather OInd. vātiµgaṇa- the egg-plant Solanum melongena (Turner 1966, no. 11503), which however, according to Turner, is probably of same ultimate origin as other names for this plant, among which OInd. bhaṇṭākī, bhr̥ṇṭikā, vr̥ntāka- (cf.
