MIr. *āčār < OIr. *āčarna- (Hinz 1975, 21); Arm. LW ačaṙ furniture; the MIr. word is attested as the second element of the compound ManParth. bwdʾcʾr /bōδāār/ spices, ManMP bwyʾcʾr, bwyʾʾcʾr /bōyāzār/ spice, fragrances (ibid. 115 and 119; Ghilain 1939, 65; Sundermann 1995, 287; Henning 1958, 39 n. 4); NP āčār powdered or salted meats, pickles, or fruits, preserved in salt, vinegar, honey, or syrup (Steingass 19). All these words are connected with the MIr. impersonal verb *čār- it is necessary (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 124); cf. MP čār means, remedy (Weber 1997, 629) and čārag means. — Off. Aram.
