ܐܒܛܐܒܐ bṭʾbʾ (corr. Müller 1894, 364; codd. ܐܒܛܐܒܢ ʾbṭʾbn) the sun for the Persians
MP āftāb sunshine; cf. ManMP ʾptʾb /āftāb/ sunshine (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 50); ManParth. ʾbdʾb /abdāb/ sunshine (Boyce 1977, 5; Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 9), but Sims-Williams (personal communication) supposes that the ManParth. form should be read /āβdāb/; Jud.-Pers. ʾptʾb; NP āftāb the sun (Steingass 79) ● AS 4, 9, 2 ◆ LS 2b; PS Suppl. 2
The Ir. compound traces back to OIr. *ā-bā- + *tāpa- < Indo-Ir. *ā-bhā- + *tāpa- (Horn 9; Rastorgueva – Edel'man 2000, 301, s.v. *āb(ā)-; cf. Henning 1937a, 80; Ghilain 1939, 72).
