According to PS Suppl., the Syr. term is a loanword from Pers., but Weryho 1972, 308 claims that NP šaxār, šaxīra black vitriol (Steingass 737 f.; Lazard 1990, 256 gives "potasse" as the meaning of NP šaxār, qualified as a rare word in NP) are loanwords from Syr. šḥrʾ, a term connected with the verbal root šḥr to be black ● Kays 256, 11; EN 25, 63 ◆ LS 770b–771a; Nöldeke 1892, 45, contra Lagarde Nom 32 n, cf.
