ܟܘܺܝܚܳܐ [†] kwyḥʾ kwiḥā suffering from ectropion, having the lower eyelid weak or drooping
Derivatives: ܟܘܝܼܚܘܼܬܵܐ kwyḥwtʾ kwiḥūṯā the disease of having the lower eyelid weak or drooping; ܐܹܬܟܲܘܲܚ ʾtkwḥ etkawaḥ to have the lower eyelid weak or drooping
LS suggests the comparison with NP kōx the matter which hardens in the corner of the eye (Steingass 1059); cf. also NP kīx matter which collects in the corner of the eye (ibid. 1068); NP kīγ matter in the corners of the eye; eye-sore (ibid. 1069). However, if the Syr. term were a loanword from Iranian, its model would be a relatively old one, beginning with the cluster xw- and containing Ir. x, corresponding to Syr. ḥ, as normal in older borrowings: but an Ir. model similar to **xwīx does not seem to have existed. In fact, the Iranian origin is untenable: this technical term is a purely Semitic one, related to Md. kauihta (occurring in incantations as an attribute of the evil eye) and JBA kwḥtʾ "trübes Sehen": see Ford 2002 and Lidzbarski 1902, 102 n. 4 ● kwyḥʾ BA 4621; BB 873, 1; kwyḥwtʾ ibid.; ʾtkwḥ BB 328, 19 ◆ LS 320b
