ܒܽܘܣܬܳܢܳܐ bwstnʾ bustānā garden, orchard
Allotrope: ܒܣܬܢܐ bstnʾ
MP bōstān [bwst’n'] garden (Nyberg 48); CPD only lists MP bōyestān [bwdstʾn'] (flower) garden (CPD 19); ManMP bwystʾn /bōyestān/ garden (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 119); NP bōstān lit. place of perfume; a garden, a kitchen-garden; a green spot (Steingass 207). NW forms are ManParth. bwdystʾn /bōδestān/ garden (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 116; Ghilain 1939, 65); Arm. LW burastan garden (Hübschmann AG 122, no. 116); Sogd. βwδstnyh parc, garden. — Off. Aram. bwysṭʾn; Talm. Aram. bwstn garden (Telegdi 234, 30; cf. ibid. 220). Even if the Syr. words are late attested, they were not borrowed from NP because the presence of the corresponding loanword in Talm. Aram. indicates an earlier borrowing, as already suggested by Telegdi 234, 30. This scholar holds that Syr. bwstnʾ, Talm. Aram. bwstnʾ and Arm. LW burastan derive from ManParth. bōδistān (NW form), even if he admits that the Syr. and Talm. Aram. words were borrowed in the Sasanian epoch (Telegdi 220), whereas Off. Aram. bwysṭʾn reflects a SW older form, because it mantains the internal SW -y-, corresponding to NW -δ-. However, the more probable model of the Syr. and Talm. Aram. loanwords is MP bōstān ● JaRS1 126u = 2 139pu; Prot 102, 5; BB 704, 15 ◆ LS 82b; PS Suppl. 45
