ܐܶܣܛܒܪ̈ܐ sṭbrʾ esṭaḇrē (plur.) silk dress, gold brocade
Reborrowing: ܐܸܣܛܲܪܓܵܐ ʾsṭbrgʾ esṭaḇrgā
In my opinion, both ʾsṭbrʾ and ʾsṭbrgʾ were borrowed from MP stabrag [stplk'] shot silk (CPD 77); the older loanword, ʾsṭbrʾ, shows a stronger morpho-phonological adaptation. See also NP, Arab. istabrak thick silk brocade interwoven with gold; a kind of shot silk (ibid. 50). Probably the Iranian word is connected with Av. staβra- hard, strong, thick (AirWb 1592); MP stabr [stpl] big, coarse, strong (CPD 77); NP sitabr thick, coarse; hard, stiff (Steingass 655; see also Horn 158) and NP istabr great, thick, big, gross. — Arab. istabraq brocade ● ʾsṭbrʾ PsC 200, 9; ʾsṭbrgʾ BA 966; BB 219u ◆ LS 32b; Lagarde GA 13, 25; Nöldeke 1890, 13; PS Suppl. 26
