OP stūnā-, Av. st—na-, stunā- (AirWb 1608); OInd. sthū́ṇā- (Mayrhofer EWA 2, 101); MP stūn, stūnak column, pillar (CPD 78; Nyberg 181); NP sutūn. — Off. Aram. stwnh (Hinz 1973, 51). Old loanword, already attested in Off. Aram. and in the older Syriac inscriptions (Healey 1995, 81). The form ʾsṭwnrʾ is also interesting because it corresponds exactly to Gr. στυλίτης, but it is formed with the Iranian loanword ʾsṭwnʾ to which is added the suffix -ārā ← Gr. -άριος ← Lat. -ārius (the case ending being replaced by the aleph of the construct state): as regards this example of morphological alignment of a foreign word by means of a suffix coming from another foreign language see § 11.6; on the initial aleph see § 11.4 ● ʾsṭwnʾ 2Par 3, 15 and 16; 23, 18; 2Par 6, 15; Afr 278, 15; ER 8, 26; PsC 60, 8; 173, 15; 219, 5 (plur.); ʾsṭwnrʾ ES 2, 144, 2; AS 2, 242, 27; Bh ce 3, 195, 7; ʾsṭwnyʾ Ge in AS 122, 6; Thes hymn 3, 203, 1; Bh chr 100, 19 ◆ LS 33b; Lagarde GA 13, 26
