ܨܰܪܘܳܐ [†] ṣrwʾ ṣarwā 1. pine kernels; 2. cedar bark; 3. μάκηρ mace
Cf. MP sarw [slw(b)'] cypress (CPD 74); ManMP srw /sarw/ cypress (Durkin-Meisterernst 2004, 309); NP sarv name of a plant (Steingass 786). The Syr. word, in any case, is a true Semitic form; as Leonid Kogan (personal communication) remarks, “The Iranian etymology for this term is unlikely in view of its wide and old (Ugarit, el-Amarna) attestation in Semitic (vd. Koehler-Baumgartner p. 1055 under Hebr. ṣörī)”. If there is any connection between the Semitic forms and MP sarw, we have to hypothesise a loanword from Semitic into MP ● pine kernels Gn 37, 25; 43, 11; Narsai 2, 284, 8; ES 1, 97D; cedar bark Sir 28, 11 cf.
