ܗܶܡܝܳܢܳܐ hmynʾ hemyānā belt, girdle
Allotrope: ܗܝܼܡܝܵܢܵܐ hymynʾ himyānā
OIr. *ham-yāha-na-, formed with the verbal root Ir. *yāh-, related to Gr. ζώννυμι (<*ζώσ-νυ-μι), preceded by the prefix Ir. ham- "together, with", and followed by the formative suffixe -na- (IE. *-no-); cf. Av. 1yāh- to gird (AirWb 1290) and 2yāh- n. belt, girdle (AirWb 1291); MIr. *hamyān, *hemyān; NP hamyān, hamayān girdle, belt (Steingass 1512; Horn 247). — Talm. Aram. hmyyn belt, girdle (Telegdi 241, 60; Shaked 1994, 109 f.); Md. hymyʾnʾ hemyānā ← MIr. *hamyān, *hemyān < *ham-yāhana (Widengren 1960, 94). As to the vowel quality in the Talm. Aram. form, Telegdi observes that in Aramaic the vowel of the first syllable was i (e), already attested in Josephus Flavius (Antiquitates 3, 7, 2), where the form ἐμιᾶν appears. As a matter of fact, the editors of Josephus Flavius have always ἐμίαν (Ant. Iud. 3, 7, 2), "emended" to ἐμιᾶν by Lagarde. Hinz 1975, 114, s.v. OP *hamyānaka-, quotes from Belardi 1969, 200 another incorrect form, namely Gr. ἐμιᾶν, without aspiration and with circumflex accent.
